The Power Of People

We’re all people. I, writing this now, am a person. You, reading this, are a person. We’re all people, and as a people, we have this incredible power. A power which can build up others, a power which can inspire and influence, a power which can change the world. However, not all choose to use this power wisely. Some bring people down, demotivate and destroy, some people demoralize our world.

Ever heard of the domino effect? Where one small action can cause a hundred other things. People can be this one small action, in fact, we often are. For good and for bad. We, as human beings, start of a reaction of events. Now I know this all sounds scary; that’s because it is. We often forget just how much of an impact we have on others’ lives. How one small insult may be the last thing to completely destroy someone’s confidence or one small compliment may make someone’s entire day. Be sure you taste your words before you spit them out. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything. . . affects everything.

I am in high school, I hear and see rude, insensitive, disgusting and downright mean comments and actions every day. I can’t seem to get my head around how people can be so mean, how people can be so disrespectful. Every day there are at least 10 people in school, crying, solely due to what someone’s said. How do the people who use their power wrongly, sleep at night. How do they wake up and do it all over again, without feeling an ounce of guilt? Are these people just mean? Or do they not understand the power of their voice? Of their actions? No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of others. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same.  A few nice words can go further than you may think. So be nice, be nice to people even if your own heart is breaking, because there’s no need to break theirs too.

While talking about love, a friend told me that ‘the strongest drug that exists for a human, is another human being’. Although it is in a different context, the point still remains. We are powerful, we often forget just how so. Life comes with its limitations. You may not always be the smartest person in the room, and you may not always be the strongest or the funniest or the most talented. But you can always be nice and you can always be kind, and this is what you should be every minute of every day for the rest of your life. Because yes, those other things, they’re great things. But these things are better. These things can change people, these things can change the world.  The world is filled with nice people if you can’t find one be one.

If you can’t be kind, be quiet.
